How Often Should I Visit the Dentist?

Visit the dentist

It’s a fair question to ask considering most of us only seek the dentist when there is a problem. For good oral hygiene and care, most experts would suggest that you visit the dentist every six months for a good cleaning and exam. However, there are those who would beg to differ on this suggestion.

If your gums and teeth are in reasonably good condition, there are some who would venture to say that a visit twice per year is not a necessity. However, without these visits, you lose the opportunity to have the dentist validate how well you are brushing and flossing and caring for your teeth at home. Without the twice yearly visit, you lose the frequent assessment of cavity and periodontal disease checks. Both of these conditions can contribute to the destruction of the bone that surrounds the root of the tooth leading to loose teeth in the mouth.

Consistent dental care is also essential in that it can tell the story of your overall health. Did you know that more than 80 percent of people who have both diabetes and gum disease develop some cardiovascular disease?

While many of us understand all the reasons why we should maintain regular visits to the dentists, cost may prevent us from going. If cost is a concern or a reason that patient smiling with the dentist - visit the dentistprevents you from seeking adequate care for your teeth, you might consider taking a dental vacation also known as dental tourism to Mexico where you can still receive dental care at a more affordable price. For example, U.S. citizens who reside in the states of California, Arizona and Texas; dental tourism in Mexico can save them thousands of dollars in costs.

If you are going to visit Mexico for your dental tourism vacation be aware of the phony dentists that give very low prices just to get the attention from tourists; this mostly happens in the border towns where the traffic for dental tourism is very high. However, it is important to note that there are highly competent dentists with degrees and board certifications from Western countries who provide excellent services for a fraction of the cost.

Before embarking on your first Mexico dental vacation, do your research to ensure there truly is a cost savings. Take your time to locate a good dentist with a good reputation.  Their accreditations should provide some insight to their true level of education. Remember to account for things such as hotel, travel and food.
